10:15 p.m. update: A man wanted in Reno for kidnapping his mentally disabled mother is barricaded in Bellflower, Calif., near Long Beach, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
The Reno Police Department called the Lakewood station of the LASD about 7:11 p.m. Thursday and told them they thought Roger Hillygus was at an apartment in Bellflower, said Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez, a public information officer for the sheriff’s office.
Roger Hillygus is alleged to have kidnapped his mother, 80-year-old Susan Hillygus, from a care facility on Aug. 8. The Reno Police Department has been trying to find her, saying she was endangered.
When deputies arrived they knocked on the door and saw both Roger Hillygus and Susan Hillygus inside, Navarro-Suarez said. The mother was not injured.
Roger Hillygus then retreated to a bedroom with his mother and it became a barricade situation. Only Roger and Susan Hillygus are in the apartment and the rest of the apartment building has been evacuated.
The crisis negotiation team and the special weapons and tactics teams have both responded. The sheriff’s office said it is trying to get Roger Hillygus to peacefully surrender.
Original story: : The Reno Police Department has made an arrest in connection with the kidnapping of a woman from a Reno care facility.
Detectives arrested 59-year-old Stewart Handte on Tuesday, August 14, 2019 for his alleged role in the kidnapping of 80-year-old Susan Hillygus.
Susan was taken from her care facility back on August 8, 2019. Investigators say Handte walked into the care home with suspect Roger Hillygus, Susan’s son, provided false information to staff, and assisted in taking Susan from the home.
Handte was the former appointed Sheriff of Mineral County. Most recently, he was the Police Chief for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, but was removed from the position on July 15, 2019, prior to his arrest.
The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony has released a statement saying, “No one at the RSIC was aware of the alleged charges for which Handte was arrested.”
The Colony says it is cooperating fully with the investigation.
